Set in the dark post-war reality, Krzysztof Zanussi’s film presents the love story of two mature people. She is a Pole resettled after the war to the Recovered Territories, he is an American seasoned by life. Does their love stand a chance of fulfillment? Playing with the convention of melodrama, the director explores one of the most important themes in his work, which is the question of the meaning of sacrifice. The suggestive set design and excellent cinematography by Sławomir Idziak (in which red is juxtaposed with green and gray) contribute to the artistic value of the film.
