The film is an ironic parable in which Krzysztof Zanussi elaborates on one of his favourite topoi – the motif of Faust’s pact with Mephistopheles. The protagonist of this story, set after World War I, is a young theology student, an idealist, who asks a cynical industrialist for help. The film’s great asset is the cinematography of Sławomir Idziak and Pierluigi Santi, who enhance the portrayal of corruption in the depicted world by adding a greenish tinge to the images.
