Shot in West Germany, this film by Krzysztof Zanussi is a good example of the director’s intellectual cinema. The protagonist is an eccentric mathematician with the meaningful name of Augustine, who tries to find out the sense of life not only by talking to theologians, but also by carrying out various provocative actions. The film, which was awarded the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival, is among Zanussi’s works that are most highly regarded by the filmmaker himself. The special poetics of the story is enhanced by Sławomir Idziak’s black-and-white, ascetic camerawork.
