The film’s title, which is a quote from Jan Kochanowski’s Laments, raises the question of where the essence of humanity lies. The protagonists of the drama, a Uruguayan consul and his wife, are based in Poland just before World War II, where the political atmosphere is very tense. The woman, sensitive to other people’s suffering, experiences a shock when confronted with the brutal reality. The film seems to be one of Krzysztof Zanussi’s most underrated and yet most visually interesting works. Sławomir Idziak’s dark, gloomy cinematography perfectly captures the specifics of a world that condemns the good to oblivion.
