A German film in Krzysztof Zanussi’s oeuvre, which analyzes the attitudes of intellectuals during World War II. An educated Wehrmacht captain, interested in high culture, is stationed at the manor house of a Polish countess and experiences fascination with the aristocrat, in whom he recognizes a similar sensitivity. Why did a man from an educated family become a supporter of Hitler? Has the traumatic experience of World War II been remembered sufficiently and taught a lesson to modern society? The autumn landscape, associated with the dying and passing away of the old world, provides a meaningful setting for these reflections.
