BVK & CSI Seminar: Look Management: From Prep to Post
Recent developments in lighting, camera technology and post production have increased the cinematographers' possibilities to create and manipulate moving images, again. But before we discuss some of these developments within a panel of international cinematographers and colorists, we'll have a primer on one of the most fundamental terms in cinematography, the look of an image. In 2015 Steve Yedlin ASC (‘Glass Onion’, ‘Knives Out’, ‘Star Wars Ep. 8’) presented his display preparation demo at Camerimage in an effort to end the debate about the look of a specific digital camera. Instead, he proved that all current high end digital cinematography cameras captured enough information to create all kinds of looks, including but not limited to emulating photo-chemical film stock. Joining live from L.A. we will discuss the situation in cinematography 8 years after his demo, clarify his approach in categorizing image attributes to describe the look of an image and speak about his personal approach to preparing and finishing a project. Moderated by senior colorist and lecturer Dirk Meier BVK CSI the “primer” will lead to a panel discussion of recent technological developments like in-camera texture application, higher resolution and dynamic range capture, virtual production and the personal approach to preparing and communicating the intended look of a project. Further participants in this talk will be Ari Wegner ACS, Pascale Marin AFC and Kevin Shaw CSI. Supported by AFC, BVK, CSI and EnergaCAMERIMAGE
