Krzysztof Zanussi’s graduation film about a young art historian who arrives at an isolated monastery to conserve and restore historic artefacts. The director confronts a carefree man with the figure of a dying monk, contrasting the sacred with the profane, life with death, youth with old age. In this almost dialogue-free film, the meaning can be found in the images – in the exchange of glances, the rich symbolism, the play of light and shadow.
