During the colonization and man-made famine of the 1930s in Kazakh ASSR, a gravedigger Isatai picks up the bodies on his cart and takes them to the mass grave – a huge, gaping hole in the ground. Every day he brings new bodies of women, children and men. The head of the village hopes to get some provision from Sarkand and sends Isatai to deliver a message. Trying to protect his younger brother, Isatai takes him on the road.
