Organised on the first anniversary of the artist’s passing, the Bill Viola exhibition opened with a ceremonial vernissage on 24 July 2025 across two venues: the Centre of Contemporary Art “Znaki Czasu” and the exhibition space of the TUMULT Foundation – CAMERIMAGE Cinema. Accompanying the Festival, the exhibition – to which Festival participants will be invited during the Festival week – is dedicated to one of the first contemporary artists to embrace video techniques as a medium for artistic creation. Bill Viola developed his own distinctive style of installations composed with moving images, rooted in profound philosophical reflection and in-depth studies of Old Master paintings. He explored and examined the potential of emerging electronic techniques for recording and projecting images and sound, right up to the digital revolution, which enabled him to reveal to audiences the physiological dimensions of visual perception, shaped by and reflecting human emotions. While many video artists focused mainly on the conceptual aspect of their visual works, Bill Viola approached the aesthetic form of his creations with extraordinary precision, ultimately producing works that are more than painterly compositions – works that delight the viewer yet also unsettle and surprise with their visual effects and the associations they evoke. Presenting 32 installations, the exhibition is the result of collaboration between two institutions: the private TUMULT Foundation, co-organiser of the Festival, and the Centre of Contemporary Art “Znaki Czasu”. The presentation of Bill Viola’s work in Toruń is an undertaking of immense scale; in both venues specially designed spaces have been created to ensure the most fitting conditions for experiencing his art, impressive in their ambition and scope. The exhibition is accompanied by a richly illustrated catalogue of nearly 200 pages, prepared by Kira Perov, Bill Viola’s wife, and Marek Żydowicz, the exhibition’s curators. It includes, among other features, a remarkable interview with Bill Viola conducted years ago by John Hanhardt. The exhibition was run until 31 December 2025.

The exhibition was organised by the collective Femmes à la caméra, a group of professional women and queer creators working with the moving image. It presents photographic and film materials produced by women and non-binary practitioners behind the camera, highlighting a perspective that differs from the one traditionally dominant in cinematography. At the same time, it invites reflection on the notion of the “female gaze”, asking whether this way of seeing in photography and film is a myth, a constraint, or a transformative force capable of reshaping visual language. The installation encourages viewers to consider whether the perspective offered by women and non-binary artists functions merely as an opposition to the “male gaze”, or whether it constitutes a fully developed, transformative visual standpoint with its own language, aesthetics and sensibility. Presented as part of the Festival, the exhibition exemplifies ongoing efforts to enhance the visibility of women filmmakers and photographers within the world of cinema. It also serves as an artistic manifesto, reminding us that behind the camera, the light and the frame, there are often individuals marginalised within the traditional film and photographic industries, whose work has the power to alter the way we look at the world.
