Just a few hours ago, the winners of the 98th Academy Awards were announced, and the gala at the Dolby Theatre officially closed an incredibly emotional film awards season. We now know the full verdict-not only from the Oscars® but also from the BAFTA Awards, the Golden Globes, and prestigious industry honors such as the ASC. Among this year's victors are creators whose craftsmanship we had the honor of admiring during last year's CAMERIMAGE Festival in Toruń.
The Grand Triumph of One Battle After Another
The undisputed winner of Oscar night was the film One Battle After Another. The production took home the most important statuette for Best Picture, while Paul Thomas Anderson accepted Oscars® for Directing and Writing (Adapted Screenplay).
The film also dominated the technical categories, triumphing in Film Editing and Casting (Cassandra Kulukundis), while Sean Penn confirmed his acting prowess by winning the Oscar® for Actor in a Supporting Role. This picture was also a major winner at the BAFTA gala, where it was named Best Film of the year, and at the Golden Globes, where it triumphed as Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy.
A Historic Success in Cinematography
For the community gathered around the CAMERIMAGE Festival, however, the most significant outcomes occurred in the cinematography category. The Oscar® for Cinematography went to Autumn Durald Arkapaw for her visionary work on Sinners. This is a historic moment, and this success confirms the author's previous nomination at the BAFTAs. Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler, became one of the most awarded titles of the season, winning Oscars® for Writing (Original Screenplay), Music (Original Score) (Ludwig Göransson), and Actor in a Leading Role (Michael B. Jordan).
It is worth noting, however, that the cinematography community appreciated a diversity of styles this year. While the Academy chose Autumn Durald Arkapaw, the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) presented its top award to Michael Bauman for his work on One Battle After Another, highlighting the high and balanced level of this year's competition.
Visual Masterpieces: Frankenstein and Hamnet
Another production that celebrated victory thanks to its unique aesthetic was Frankenstein, directed by Guillermo del Toro. The film, which graced our screens in Toruń, was deemed unrivaled by the Academy in the visual categories, winning three Oscars®:
- Production Design (Tamara Deverell and Shane Vieau)
- Costume Design (Kate Hawley)
- Makeup and Hairstyling (Mike Hill, Jordan Samuel, and Cliona Furey)
Meanwhile, the drama Hamnet brought a well-deserved Oscar® to Jessie Buckley for Actress in a Leading Role. Before winning over the Academy, the film was a favorite at the Golden Globes, where it won Best Motion Picture - Drama. We also cannot forget the success of international cinema-the Norwegian film Sentimental Value, directed by Joachim Trier and presented in Toruń, received the Oscar® for Best International Feature Film. The list of winners is rounded out by the technical masterpiece F1, which took home the statuette for Best Sound.
We extend our warmest congratulations to all the winning filmmakers! We are delighted that CAMERIMAGE has once again served as a milestone on the road to the most prestigious honors in the world of cinema. We invite you to follow our social media channels, where we regularly post video materials and interviews with this year's winners, recorded during their visits to Toruń.
