There are artists in the world of cinema whose work remains almost invisible, yet determines the rhythm of a story, the power of its emotions, and the way a film stays in the viewer’s memory. Milenia Fiedler belongs to this exceptional group - one of Poland’s most distinguished film editors, whose body of work has helped shape the history of contemporary Polish cinema for several decades. We are delighted to announce that she will be honored with the Award for Film Editor at this year’s ToruńCAMERIMAGE. The award is presented to filmmakers who, through editing, give cinematic images a distinctive rhythm, meaning, and emotional depth.

Editing is the art of making decisions - choosing the right look, gesture, silence, or moment to cut. In Milenia Fiedler’s hands, however, it becomes something more: an invisible structure that allows images to speak, builds tension, and guides the viewer through the characters’ most complex emotions. Her remarkable sensitivity, precision, and ability to listen to the inner rhythm of a story give each film she helps create its own distinctive language.

Born in Łódź, Milenia Fiedler studied at the Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (FAMU), graduating in Film Editing in 1989. From the outset, her artistic development went hand in hand with her academic career. She received her doctorate in art in 2005, followed four years later by her habilitation in film art.

Her impressive body of work comprises nearly 250 feature films, documentaries, television series, and productions for Polish Television Theatre. Milenia Fiedler has collaborated with some of the most important figures in Polish cinema, making a significant contribution to the narrative and emotional dimensions of their work.

Her collaborations with Andrzej Wajda include Katyn, Sweet Rush, and Walesa: Man of Hope. She worked with Wojciech Marczewski on Time of Treason and Weiser, and with Janusz Majewski on Eccentrics, the Sunny Side of the Street and Black Mercedes. Her filmography also includes Bodo Kox’s The Girl from the Wardrobe, Jerzy Stuhr’s Citizen, Filip Bajon’s Damaged and The Butler, as well as Urszula Antoniak’s Nude Area and Beyond Words.

Her collaboration with Krzysztof Zanussi holds a special place in her career. Fiedler edited, among others, his films Foreign Body, Ether, The Perfect Number, and Burnt Offering. Such a diverse filmography confirms her extraordinary versatility—her ability to find the right rhythm in intimate psychological dramas, expansive historical narratives, and films built around more classical narrative structures.

Milenia Fiedler’s artistic sensitivity has earned her repeated recognition within the film industry. She has twice received the Best Editing Award at the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia, for Time of Treason and Weiser. For the latter, she also received the Polish Film Award – Eagle.

She was also nominated for the Eagles for her work on Katyn, Walesa: Man of Hope, and The Butler. Her achievements in documentary filmmaking were recognized with the Polish Filmmakers Association President’s Award for Best Documentary Editing for The Voice, presented at the Krakow Film Festival.

Milenia Fiedler not only helps shape Polish cinema but has also shared her knowledge and experience with successive generations of filmmakers for more than two decades. She has long been associated with the Łódź Film School, where she worked as a lecturer in the Editing Department at the Faculty of Film and Television Directing and later served as Head of the Department from 2016 to 2020. She played an important role in developing the curriculum and nurturing young filmmakers, teaching them that editing is not merely a technical stage of filmmaking but one of the most important tools of cinematic storytelling.

She has served as Rector of the Łódź Film School since 2020 and was re-elected for a second term in 2024. Her teaching and organizational work remain a natural extension of her artistic practice, helping to create an environment in which talent can develop through knowledge, responsibility, and creative courage.

Milenia Fiedler is a member of the European Film Academy, the Polish Film Academy, and the Polish Association of Editors. She has also served on the juries of major Polish and international film festivals on numerous occasions, including Millennium Docs Against Gravity and the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia.

She also shares a special relationship with the Festival in Toruń. In 2023, she served on the Main Competition Jury, helping decide the recipients of the Festival’s most important awards. This time, she will return to Toruń as both a guest and the recipient of an award honoring her own exceptional contribution to the art of filmmaking.

The ToruńCAMERIMAGE Award for Film Editor recognizes both Milenia Fiedler’s impressive body of work and her extraordinary ability to create meaning between successive frames. It is precisely there—in the meeting of image, sound, time, and emotion—that the artistry of an editor who has long remained one of the most important figures in Polish film culture reveals itself. We are honored that Milenia has accepted our invitation, will join us for the 34th edition of the Festival, and will receive the Award.

The 34th edition of the ToruńCAMERIMAGE International Film Festival will take place in Toruń from 7 to 14 November 2026.
