DIRECTOR: Hector Aponysus
CINEMATOGRAPHER: Jaime Ackroyd
PRODUCTION: Park Pictures
COUNTRY AND YEAR: France, 2024

In Marseille, plongeurs are known for diving from extreme heights – motorways, clifftops and buildings – into the Mediterranean Sea. They are both applauded and vilified, regularly featuring in music videos, viral TikTok reels and local news, where journalists offer romantic accounts of their exploits. Each summer, a death or severe accident occurs, prompting the press to turn on the plongeurs, making them mascots for the city’s social ills, often with a thinly veiled racist subtext. The film follows these young men, many from impoverished, immigrant backgrounds, as they navigate the uneasy transition from boyhood to adulthood, revealing how this hazardous pastime helps them articulate and negotiate their complex experiences and identities.

 A QUIET STORM

DIRECTOR: Benjamin Nicolas
CINEMATOGRAPHER: Alexandre Nour
PRODUCTION: Skeptic films
COUNTRY AND YEAR: Canada, Japan, 2025

In Japan, Maïto is 14 years old and has a talent that allows him to move into a world beyond his everyday limitations. Raised in a home where the needs of his disabled sister were always at the forefront, he had to find his own way to draw attention to himself. He can express himself in Krump, a dance in which he can use movement to convey his emotions and relieve stress. It is also an opportunity for him to communicate better and deepen his bond with his deaf sister. A Quiet Storm proves that words are not necessary to build valuable relationships.
