Two-time Emmy Award-winning and two-time Oscar®-nominated filmmaker Liz Garbus, one of the most important figures in contemporary documentary cinema, will come to Toruń to take part in the 33rd edition of the EnergaCAMERIMAGE Festival. She is an acclaimed director, producer, and business leader — honored by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, winner of the Sundance Grand Jury Prize, and a BAFTA, Film Independent Spirit Award, International Documentary Association, and Grammy nominee. This year, she will be presented with the Award for Outstanding Achievements in Documentary Filmmaking. Her visit will be a unique opportunity to meet an artist who is shaping the face of contemporary documentary film.

Liz Garbus is a two-time Emmy Award-winning and two-time Academy Award®-nominated filmmaker who has helmed some of the most celebrated documentaries and premium drama series today as a director and executive producer under her prolific company, Story Syndicate.

Garbus’ latest projects are the genre-defying series acclaimed for their victim-centric approach – Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer, which debuted atop the Netflix US Series Chart, and One Night in Idaho for Prime Video. Previously, Harry & Meghan, a six-part series that explores the span of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s relationship, repeatedly set weekly viewership record highs as Netflix’s most-watched documentary. A select filmography of Garbus’ esteemed directorial work includes The Farm: Angola, USAWhat Happened, Miss Simone?Bobby Fischer Against the World; Nothing Left UnsaidThe Fourth Estate; I’ll Be Gone in the DarkAll In: The Fight for Democracy; and Becoming Cousteau, among others.

After her Sundance-premiering scripted feature debut, Lost GirlsGarbus continued establishing herself in narrative, helming the season four finale of The Handmaid’s Tale, which earned her an Emmy nomination, as well as Yellowjackets (Showtime) and Good American Family (Hulu), in which she also executive produces. Upcoming, Liz is directing and executive producing a documentary about the American tennis player Billie Jean King for ESPN.

Throughout Garbus’ career, notable accolades she has received include: two Academy Award® nominations, two Primetime Emmy Award wins and a total of seven overall nominations, two BAFTA Award nominations, two Film Independent Spirit Award nominations, seven International Documentary Association nominations, a Grammy nomination, a Directors Guild of America nomination, the Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize, the SXSW Film Festival Audience Award, two Humanitas Prize nominations, a Cinema Eye Honours Award, a Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards nomination, and a Grierson Trust British Documentary Award.

The Award for Outstanding Achievements in Documentary Filmmaking and a meeting with Liz Garbus will take place during the 33rd edition of the EnergaCAMERIMAGE Festival, which this year will be held in Kujawy Pomorze Region, in Toruń, from November 15–22. This is a unique opportunity to personally meet one of the most important creators of contemporary documentary cinema and take part in a retrospective of her work.
