Painting was Andrzej Wajda’s first artistic pursuit, while throughout his creative career literature provided him with stories, characters and themes that took on new life on screen. How did images, words and ideas become cinema in his hands? As part of ‘Fall for Films in the Kujawy Pomorze Region – Cinematic Confections: Andrzej Wajda’, we will explore two vital sources of the director’s cinematic imagination and the ways in which he translated them into his own distinctive visual language.

Thanks to the support of the Regional Government of Kujawy and Pomorze, ToruńCAMERIMAGE will revisit four films by Andrzej Wajda: Landscape After the Battle, Pan Tadeusz: The Last Foray in Lithuania, Sweet Rush and Afterimage. Together, they offer an opportunity to look at his cinema through its dialogue with painting and literature, from deliberate visual quotations and inspirations drawn from composition, light and colour to literary worlds transformed by the director into autonomous works of cinema.
