This year’s edition of the ToruńCAMERIMAGE International Film Festival will provide a special opportunity to celebrate the anniversary of the birth of Andrzej Wajda, one of the most outstanding figures in Polish cinema, often described as its greatest painter. The special programme prepared for the occasion aims to introduce festival audiences from dozens of countries to the director’s remarkable body of work and highlight his extraordinary contribution to the history of world cinema. One of the highlights of the celebrations will be the REscoringWajda concert, performed by the Polish Radio Choir – Lusławice, which will take place during the festival’s Opening Ceremony.
The REscoringWajda project is an original reinterpretation of music from Andrzej Wajda’s most important films. The a cappella vocal arrangements offer a fresh perspective on compositions that have become an integral part of Polish cultural heritage. The concert programme will feature music associated with such films as Pan Tadeusz, (Zemsta), Katyń, The Shadow Line (Smuga cienia), Innocent Sorcerers (Niewinni czarodzieje) and Hunting Flies (Polowanie na muchy).
The audience will hear music by outstanding composers who collaborated with the director: Wojciech Kilar, Krzysztof Komeda, Krzysztof Penderecki, Andrzej Korzyński and Zygmunt Konieczny. The new arrangements have been created by acclaimed Polish composers and arrangers: Marcin Wawruk, Wojciech Lemański, Maciej Kabza and Marek Raczyński. The programme features both instantly recognisable film themes and compositions that take on a new depth and emotional intensity in their choral interpretations.
The concert will be performed by the Polish Radio Choir – Lusławice, one of Poland’s leading vocal ensembles. Founded in 1948, the choir has been performing for over 75 years, presenting a repertoire that ranges from a cappella music to large-scale vocal and instrumental works. Combining a deep respect for tradition with an openness to contemporary artistic exploration, the ensemble is known for its distinctive sound, which can be heard at some of the most prestigious musical events in Poland and abroad.
Polish music of the 20th century holds a special place in the choir’s artistic activities. The ensemble has performed and premiered works by some of Poland’s most important composers, including Krzysztof Penderecki, Witold Lutosławski, Henryk Mikołaj Górecki and Wojciech Kilar. It has also collaborated with leading orchestras and musical institutions and participated in numerous festivals and international projects. Since October 2025, the Polish Radio Choir – Lusławice has been under the artistic direction of Dr hab. Dawid Ber.
The concert will be conducted by Dawid Ber, a conductor, choirmaster, music theorist and educator, and professor at the Grażyna and Kiejstut Bacewicz University of Music in Łódź. He graduated in music theory and choral conducting. From 2011 to 2021, he served as principal conductor and director of the Choir of the Łódź Philharmonic. He regularly collaborates with numerous vocal ensembles, and the choirs under his direction have received awards and distinctions at competitions and festivals in Poland and abroad.
The celebrations marking Andrzej Wajda’s birth anniversary at ToruńCAMERIMAGE are particularly meaningful also because of the long-standing relationship between the director and the Tumult Foundation. The Foundation collaborated with Andrzej Wajda on the production of Afterimage (Powidoki), as well as the documentary *Andrze
