“PAINTING STILL ALIVE” EXHIBITION
11.11.2018 – 13.01.2019
Centre of Contemporary Art „Znaki Czasu” in Tpruń and TUMULT Foundation Gallery
The Tumult Foundation and the Centre of Contemporary art „Znaki Czasu” in Toruń have the great pleasure to invite to the unique exhibition Painting Still Alive… On the Way to Modernity. The exibition, a part of the 26. edition of EnergaCAMERIMAGE Festival, presents nearly 200 oil and watercolor paintings, pastels, gouaches, pencil drawings and sculptures of the most iconic 19th- and 20th-century artists, including Picasso, Magritte, Matisse, Chirico, Miró, Ensor, Nolde, Warhol, Kiefer, Ikemura. All works come from the collection of Michael Haas, the owner of a gallery in Berlin. The exhibition is curated by Marek Żydowicz and Michael Haas, with the help of CoCA director - Wacław Kuczma and coordinator - Agnieszka Swoińska, and the suport of Michał Zaleski, president of Toruń. The exhibition is financed for the most part by the Tumult Foundation.
This kind of exhibition, with numerous iconic names, has never been shown in Toruń and has very rarely been shown in Poland in general. Over 30 artists whose work will be presented in CoCA are going to join the exhibition opening at 11th November 2018. The meeting with the artists is meant to start a permanent cooperation with various art centers all around the world, which has been the main goal of Marek Żydowicz and Wacław Kuczma since they took charge of CoCA. All the artists that will come to Toruń from Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Paris, London, New York or Los Angeles are connected with their local galleries and art societies which will surely facilitate the exchange of ideas and projects with CoCA and EnergaCAMERIMAGE and open the doors wide to world-class contemporary art centers for our artists.
This exhibition is a must-see. It is a journey to the past, a time travel to various manifestations and ateliers of the legendary 20th century artists. It is a perfect opportunity to see the very essence of the contemporary European art in the venue of CoCA. Not so long ago, in the communist Poland, this kind of events would be censored. This is a perfect opportunity to make up for lost time without the need to travel to museums and galleries in Europe and other parts of the world. Toruń can be proud of this exhibition and other cities will envy it without a doubt. Apart from the main collection, the exhibition will include three different presentations focusing on the work of contemporary artists: Jakob Mattner, Joachim Elzmann and Dimitris Tzamouranis. Mattner’s and Elzmann’s artwork will be presented in CoCA, while Dimitris Tzamouranis’ exhibition is going to be held in the former Evangelical church at the New Town Market – the Tumult Foundation’s residence.
