CITY OF SHADOWS – POLICE PHOTOGRAPHY FROM THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY
In the early 1990s, several tons of negatives were recovered from flooded police warehouses in Lidcombe, a suburb of Sydney. The photos saved from the flood showed thieves, fraudsters, prostitutes, murderers, drug dealers, pimps, fences, and card cheats. The biggest mystery that has not been solved and will probably never be solved is the identity of the authors of individual photos. Nothing is known about the creators of "mug shots" from 1912 to 1930.  The Lidcombe find was first seen in November 2005 at an exhibition at the Justice Museum in Sydney. The exhibition was titled: "City of Shadows: Chaos and Crimes in Poor Districts, 1912-1948", and ended in February 2007. In 2008, the exhibition came to Poland.
