A film in which Krzysztof Zanussi explores the issue of the presence of goodness in man, the meaning of sacrifice and the nature of sanctity. The story of St. Maximilian Kolbe, a Franciscan who, while a prisoner of the Auschwitz concentration camp, offered his life for another man. We learn about the story of the saint through the perspective of an escapee from the camp, intrigued by the altruistic attitude of the priest. Zanussi breaks with the cliché of kitschy hagiographic stories and focuses on the question of the survival of values in the face of one of the greatest tragedies of the 20th century.
