In her latest film, Ulrike Ottinger sets off on a journey back to her youth. She takes us back in time, to Paris of the 1960s, when on the one hand, there was a growing resistance of the young French intelligentsia to conservative principles of life, and on the other, there still existed a post-colonial feeling of superiority of some nations over others. At that time, the German intelligentsia gathered around the legendary “Librairie Calligrammes” bookshop, which became a second home for the young Ottinger. “Paris Calligrammes” is not only an insightful portrait of the European social changes that took place in the second half of the previous century, but above all a personal reflection of a mature and fully fledged artist on the ideas that guided her in her youth
