Sweden, the mid-nineteenth century. The family of a poor farmer, Karl Gustav, sets out for America in search of a better future. In the course of the journey, it turns out that there are more emigrants heading for the promising land that inspires both hope and fear. It is a family saga, a panorama of human destinies, a picture of the beginnings of Swedish settlement overseas. Erik Poppe’s film based on Vilhelm Moberg’s prose, unlike Jan Troell’s 1971 screen adaptation, emphasizes the character of Karl Gustav’s wife Kristina.
