The story takes place in a Ukrainian village bordering on Romania and concerns an ideological split within the Zvonars family, which can be metaphorically viewed as a figurative generalization of the Ukrainian nation. Torn between the East and the West, they are desperately trying to preserve their own identity. The protagonists perish in the fire, seek shelter in dark gorges and conquer raging rivers. Ilyenko admires the beauty of this heaven on earth and asks: why are there so many tears and blood in this paradise?
