CZECH CINEMA REVIEW AT CAMERIMAGE 2018
Monday September 17th, 2018
At Camerimage Festival, we strive to highlight European film heritage as an important part of our identity, as well as an excellent “export product” that we present to guests from around the world. That is why overviews of national cinema from selected countries are regular events at our festival.
This year we choose a country due to a very sad event for the world of film. On 13 April 2018, Miloš Forman passed away. He began his artistic career in his native Prague (then Czechoslovakia), and although deeply rooted in American cinema, his films are part of the canon of the Czechoslovak New Wave. The overview of national cinema at Camerimage 2018 is therefore dedicated to Czech cinema to contrast the achievements of the late master with new trends in the cinematography of his homeland.
Still from "The Firemen's Ball"
Two films by Miloš Forman from the 1960s will be screened from restored digital copies: the Oscar-nominated The Firemen's Ball (Hoří, má panenko!) from 1967 and Black Peter (Cerný Petr) from 1963. The programme will also feature a film by another recognised creator of Czech cinema, this time representing another generation: Jan Svěrák, who based his latest film Barefoot (Po strništi bos) on the autobiography of his father, actor Zdenek Svěrák.
We close our presentation with a historical costume drama set in the Middle Ages, Little Crusader (Krizácek) directed by Václav Kadrnka, and the intimate psychological film Winter Flies (Všechno bude) directed by Olmo Omerzu.
