We sincerely invite you to the exhibition of photographs that was born out of the artist's fascination with the work of photographic masters, as well as his co-operation with actor John Malkovich. MALKOVICH, MALKOVICH, MALKOVICH. HOMAGE TO PHOTOGRAPHIC MASTERS will officially open on Sunday, 15th of November, at 6PM, at the TUMULT Gallery in Toruń.
Sandro Miller (b. 1958) is an American photographer whose commercial success has given him the opportunity to pursue his own artistic projects. Miller met John Malkovich in the late 1990s during a photo shoot for the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago. Along with numerous portraits that were published in commercial magazines, Miller collaborated with Malkovich on short films (such as Ecstasy and Malkovich Butterflies). However, it was only the series entitled Malkovich, Malkovich, Malkovich: Homage to Photographic Masters created between 2012 and 2014 that was critically acclaimed and appraised by the public in the United States and Europe. The series contains 41 colour and black-and-white photographs staged by Miller and modelled by Malkovich. Together, they recreated iconic photographs from the history of photography by the likes of Irving Penn, Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon, Bert Stern, Herb Ritts, Andy Warhol, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Dorothea Lange. The surprising success of the project, exhibited in Chicago’s Catherine Edelman Gallery in 2014, was the result of a brilliant idea, the perfect skills of Miller, and Malkovich’s amazing ability to impersonate the models from famous photographs.”
The exhibition organizers prepared a catalog with all photographs exhibited, ciritical essays written by distinguished critics Terry Barrett, Krzysztof Jurecki and Adam Mazur, and interviews with Sandro Miller and John Malkovich. The exhibition will also be accompanied by the screenings of three short films directed by Sandro Miller, starring John Malkovich: Malkovich Butterflies, Ecstasy, Allegory of the Cave. Sandro Miller will be present at the exhibition's opening and he will meet Camerimage participants during a special seminar that will take place in Opera Nova in Bydgoszcz.
The exhibition of Sandro Miller's photographs was co-financed by the City of Toruń. Arts of the World Foundation and Municipal Gallery bwa in Bydgoszcz are the exhibition partners. The exhibition will be an event accompanying the 23rd edition ofCamerimage Film Festival, but it will stay open until 15th of January 2016.
