Throughout his forty-year career in the music and film business, Martin Coppen has remained remarkably unchanged in both concept and presentation, with his rock ’n’ roll vibe and his sparkling, mischievous smile. Even though he has worked through all these decades, lighting, filming, laughing, and celebrating, his overall persona remains steady and contemporary.

A farmer’s son, Martin was born in Essex and grew up in a tiny village of 200 people named Beaumont-cum-Moze on the east coast of England. Martin was a creative child, whether it be painting and creating art, cooking, building dens, or just playing around the farm. As a teenager, Coppen left the quiet English countryside for two of the world’s most vital metropolises, London and Los Angeles. Starting as a stage lighting technician in the mid-70s, he toured with Slade, David Essex, Wings, David Bowie, Roxy Music,Genesis, Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, Bad Company, Eric Clapton, and others.

Eventually moving into the film world, as music videos gained momentum Coppen became a highly sought after gaffer, first in London and then Los Angeles, where he relocated in 1985. His passport remained his best friend, and he continued to travel internationally for both work and pleasure, constantly inspired and delighted by global cultures. Progressing into cinematography in the late 80s, Coppen’s handheld style, beautifully composed frames, and adrenalized personality launched him into the spotlight, where he remains.

Martin thrives on an energetic atmosphere and enjoys working with some of the most talented directors in the film industry, both in commercials and music videos. He has been nominated and awarded MTV/VMA and MVPA awards and a Kodak Lifetime Achievement Award for his Cinematography work for such artists as Marilyn Manson, Hole, Metallica, Duran Duran, Stone Temple Pilots, and others. Dividing his time between Los Angeles, London, and Buenos Aires, he is continually presented with three very different worlds which shape his creative perspective.

Sculpting, painting, welding, and photography provide him with catharsis for the emotions of life. Coppen’s passions are his work and his three children, Lukas, Lola, and Paloma. On any given weekend, you may find him cycling around Lake Hollywood or cooking a big Sunday lunch… from roast chicken to his legendary roast potatoes… just like his film work, it’s a feast for the senses…
